Morocco on the Move: An Ambitions Railway Program for 2030

With an order for 18 very high-speed trains and the development of the Kenitra-Marrakech line, Morocco is demonstrating a firm commitment to improving its railway infrastructure. This project is part of a broader strategy aimed at boosting the country’s economy, particularly at the eve of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

A Growth Accelerator

The kingdom of Morocco is strengthening its railway strategy with the recent order for 18 Avelia Horizon high-speed trains, signed on March 28 with Alstom. These trains, designed to reach a speeds level exceeding 300 km/h, will transform travel between Tangier and Marrakech while minimizing the carbon footprint. This €781 million project is being financed by the French Treasury, demonstrating the strong cooperation between Morocco and France.

A strategic Project

Inaugurated in 2018, the Tangier-Kenitra high-speed line marked a turning point in the Morocco 2040 Railway Plan, which aims to connect some forty cities with modern infrastructure. Morocco’s designation as co-host of the 2030 World Cup accelerated the project completion timelines, making the Kenitra-Marrakech high-speed line a strategic priority. International investors see this project as a major economic development opportunity.

While Chinese companies are participating in the construction of the high-speed rail line, France remains a key player with companies such as Colas, which has secured several contracts for civil engineering work. These collaborations reinforce the commitment of both countries to Moroccan railway development.

Economic Vision

Beyond high speed trains, Morocco plans to acquire 150 multi-service trains and renovate numerous stations. The goal is to support tourism, which has already reached a record 17.4 million arrivals in 2024, with an ambition of reaching 20 million in the near future. The Morocco Railway 2040 plan is thus at the heart of a comprehensive strategy to make Morocco an attractive hub on the international scene.
