Mali: Lost Documents and Money Returned by Honest Taxi Driver

In Bamako, Mali, an incident of honesty and integrity has captured public attention. A taxi driver, Issa Sangare, returned a forgotten bag containing $3,000 and passports to a visiting football team’s manager the following day. This act of kindness not only averted potential complications for the Malawian team but also highlighted a commendable example of personal integrity.

The Incident

During the preparations for a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match against Burkina Faso, Malawian team manager Patrick Mabedi accidentally left behind a bag in a taxi. The bag, which contained the passports of the entire team and a sum of $3,000 (approximately 1.8 million FCFA), was mistakenly left in the cab after a busy day.

The Driver’s Honesty

Issa Sangare, the 31-year-old taxi driver, was unaware of the forgotten bag until he was cleaning his vehicle the next morning. « I dropped the team at the 26th March stadium after taking them to buy ice cream. It wasn’t until I cleaned my cab that I found the bag with a laptop, passports, and money, » Sangare explained. He promptly returned the bag to the stadium, where the General Manager coordinated with the police to ensure its safe return.

Recognition of Integrity

Malian Minister of Youth, Sports, and Physical Education, Abdoul Kassim Ibrahim Fomba, praised Sangare’s honesty. « Despite the temptation of keeping the money and passports, he understood the potential impact on the Malawian team and chose to return everything. We wanted to acknowledge his exemplary behavior, which reflects well on our country. »

Positive Impact

The Malawian team was relieved and grateful to recover their important documents, money, and laptop, which would have otherwise complicated their travel back home. In recognition of his exceptional honesty, Sangare received a symbolic reward for his actions.

Issa Sangare’s act of returning the lost items not only spared the visiting team from significant travel troubles but also demonstrated the high standards of integrity and hospitality in Mali. His behavior serves as a powerful example of ethical conduct and national pride, qualities that are worthy of emulation.
